Welcome!

This blog will be about the exploration of a carnivore diet and athletic lifestyle.

I have started this ongoing study for two reasons; I wanted to chart my course as I restore my health through diet, exercise and supplements and to offer information about the Carnivore diet especially to athletes.

There are many opinions in the blogosphere about what diet is the healthiest. I have found that there is a misconception about the need for carbs in our diet, in general, and especially if one is an athlete.

There are scores of coaches, both professional and amateur, who make claims about the best time to “carb load” and the best carbs to use. The implication is that one cannot perform at one’s best without dietary carbohydrates.

Don’t tell that to Pete Jacobs, winner of the 2012 Hawaiian Ironman competition. He achieved his stunning success on a meat only diet.

While low carb high fat diets are not currently mainstream, they are certainly not new. William Banting was writing about it in the 1800s. (Barry Groves, 2002)

And if one is willing to accept that during past ice ages, humans did not have access to avocado trees and amber fields of grain, and that humans ate close to a zero carb diet for most of the year, the carnivore diet is much older. My own theory is that humans evolved to eat meat as a primary source of fuel, and that eating vegetation is a secondary adaptation for survival.

Furthermore, if you have ever seen berries and vegetables in the wild, you have probably noticed that they are significantly smaller than their genetically modified cousins in the supermarket. Thus, the carb load was much lower.

I am not a scientist nor a nutritionist. I am a retired librarian. So sources are important to me, and I will be referencing studies as well as the anecdotal information I include in my exploration of eating carnivore as a committed athlete.
